A
History of Making a Difference
The African American Fund of New Jersey, formerly
the Black United Fund of New Jersey, has worked hard to bring solutions
to African American families and the African American community
in New Jersey.
Donations through Payroll Deductions
In 1982, we won a lawsuit against the State of New Jersey to solicit donations
from employees through payroll deduction plans. This landmark decision has
enabled hundreds of non-United Way organizations to participate in work site
solicitations. It also helped us to gain access to corporate campaigns through
the strategic alliance between companies and their African American employees
at Bell Laboratories and AT&T.
Formation of the New Jersey Federation of
Black Charities
In 1993, we founded the New Jersey Federation
of Black Charities, Inc. This is the only existing network of African America
organizations in the Garden State.
Purchase of Ambrose/Ward Mansion
In 1995, we purchased the Ambrose/Ward
Mansion in East Orange to establish a cultural and educational
center for the City of East Orange and the region of Essex County.
The mansion also serves as our headquarters, as well as a venue for
special occasions, meetings, and community events.
BUF/Health & Human Services Corporation
Charted in 1994, BUF/Health & Human Services Corporation is
a non-profit organization that promotes the interest, welfare, education and
social development of the African American community in New Jersey by actively
working to develop welfare, educational and social programs.
Purchase of the Community Center
In 1994, BUF/NJ purchased the 50,000 sq. foot facility to help revitalize
the community of Plainfield, NJ. The building
houses:
an auditorium; a swimming pool, sauna and steamroom; classrooms; cafeteria
and kitchen; office space. The HHS
Community Center facility is available for events.
Formation of the African American Fund of
New Jersey
In 2004, the Black United Fund of New Jersey became the African
American Fund of New Jersey. Although our name has changed, our philosophy,
commitments, resources and location remain the same.
